Privacy and terms

What we keep when you log a sighting, what we show, and what happens to your photos.

What we keep

When you log a sighting we store the pin, date, time, rough size, your note, and anything optional you give us: your name, email address, Instagram handle and photos or videos.

There are no accounts, no advertising and no tracking cookies. The only cookie is the one that keeps the site’s owner signed in to the admin pages.

What we show

  • The pin, date, time, size and note appear on the map and on the spot’s page.
  • Your name appears as your first name only.
  • Your email address is never shown or shared. We use it only if we have a question about your sighting.
  • Photos are re-saved when they’re uploaded, which removes the location and camera details stored inside them.
  • Photos and videos are checked before they appear.

Your photos and videos

You keep the copyright in everything you send. By uploading, you confirm you took it, and you allow Murmurations to show it on this site, credited to your first name.

If you tick the Instagram box, you also allow us to share it on the Murmurations Instagram account, credited to your first name and your handle if you give one. We always check before sharing, and we will remove a post if you ask.

Sharing with BirdWatch Ireland

Sightings may be shared with BirdWatch Ireland for their Irish Starling Murmuration Survey: the place, date, time and count, without your name, email address or Instagram handle.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete anything you’ve sent, or withdraw permission for Instagram, at any time. Email hello@example.com with roughly when and where you logged it.

We keep sightings because they build a record of roosts over the years. If you ask, we remove your name, email address, handle and media and keep only the sighting itself.
